Taking Care of You

Often as nurses we are so focused on caring for others that we neglect to care for ourselves. We don't think twice when it comes to caring for the needs of our patients, families, and friends. But taking the time for us comes in last place and by then, we're exhausted. There are many ways to relax and unwind; for some it's taking a moment for quiet meditation or prayer. I personally, love a warm bubble bath with a scented candle and a glass of wine.

When life can be so hectic, taking the time to just be still is a gift you can give yourself.

Another thing that can help us recharge is exercise. We all know that exercise increases the body's level of endorphins, those chemicals in the brain that induce a sense of well-being. When I was going through a very stressful time, I hired a personal trainer because, well, it was better than killing someone. The benefits were amazing! It really helped me to cope with a challenging situation and I made some wonderful new friends too.

Although yoga doesn't appear to be as demanding as P90X (that's some serious shiznit right there), did you know that yoga is one of the best cardio exercises? I enjoy the stretching, the focus and the flow of it all. Outdoor group classes are especially restorative.

What are some ways that you like to relax and restore?
